Actual Salary

How it works · 2026/27

Clear assumptions.
No mystery maths.

Actual Salary turns annual pay into an estimate of what reaches your account. Here is what sits behind the result.

The calculation

One shared calculation engine

The calculator applies the selected Income Tax, employee National Insurance, pension and student-loan rules to your annual pay. Monthly figures divide the annual estimate by 12; payroll can differ because employers calculate PAYE by pay period and round deductions.

Starting point

The defaults are visible and changeable

The starting estimate uses tax code 1257L, England, Wales or Northern Ireland, a 5% salary-sacrifice pension on full gross salary and no student loan. The 3% employer pension illustration uses qualifying earnings between £6,240 and £50,270.

Insights

Useful context, clearly labelled

Earnings rank is an approximate interpolation of ONS ASHE full-time employee earnings. The Living Wage comparison uses £12.71 an hour and 37.5 hours a week. Pension growth uses the displayed monthly contribution, monthly compounding equivalent to 7% annual growth, and ignores fees, inflation and market volatility.
